Remembering Lion John Hawkins

John Hawkins was one of the founding members of the Somers Lions Club, established in 1966. A local real estate broker with a strong commitment to his community, John worked alongside Wayne Van Tassell and Jerry Billingsley to establish a club dedicated to serving the growing town of Somers.

 

He went on to lead the club’s first major community project: the design and construction of the pavilion at Reis Park, which has since become a beloved gathering place for community events, concerts, and celebrations.

John’s contributions helped lay the foundation for nearly six decades of service by the Somers Lions Club, leaving a legacy that continues to benefit our community today.

OUR STORY

Built to Serve

The Somers Lions Club was chartered in 1966 by a small group of neighbors who wanted to make a difference in Somers. Over the past 60+ years, they’ve grown into a vibrant organization, organizing town events, and lending a helping hand wherever it’s needed. For decades, the Lions have lived their motto: “We Serve.”

“When there’s an opportunity to help, they’ll jump in.”

Our LEOs are the next generation of leaders, young people from Somers High School who are driven to serve their community. Through hands-on projects, fundraising, and volunteer work, they learn the power of giving back and the joy of making a difference.
