From Somers to the global stage: Our journey to the 47th Annual Lions Day with the United Nations.
On March 21, 2025, the Somers Leos traded the halls of SHS for the corridors of global diplomacy at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. This wasn't just a field trip; it was an invitation to the 47th annual Lions Day with the United Nations (LDUN), where the theme for 2025 was "The Future of Service." For our Leos, it was a day to see how the work we do in our own backyard connects to a massive, worldwide mission of peace and sustainability.

The day kicked off with an exclusive tour of the UN, where we walked through the General Assembly and Security Council chambers. Standing in the very rooms where world leaders make history was a powerful reminder of the "Young Hero" potential within each of us. Our guides shared the history of the Lions’ partnership with the UN, which dates back to 1945 when Lions helped draft the original UN Charter. Seeing the diverse flags and hearing about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) made our local projects—like the Winter Drive and the Valentine’s project—feel like vital pieces of a much larger puzzle.

After the tour, we took a break for lunch, a chance to recharge and network with fellow Leos from across the country. It was inspiring to swap stories with other "Young Heroes" who are launching causes in their own towns, proving that the Leo Spark isn't just a Somers thing—it's a global movement. These informal moments of connection are often where the best ideas for new projects are born.

The centerpiece of the day was the Lions Conference, where we joined over 500 Lions, Leos, and UN dignitaries for a deep dive into the future of humanitarian work. We heard from global representatives, including
Leo-Lion Ishaan Sudan, who discussed how technology and human connection are evolving to change the world together. The speakers challenged us to think about how we can use innovation to amplify our impact, focusing on core pillars like health, education, and peace.

Walking out of the UN Plaza at the end of the day, the vibe was electric. We didn't just leave with photos; we left with a new perspective on leadership. We learned that the "Future of Service" isn't something that happens eventually—it’s something we are building right now in Somers. Whether we are folding cards for neighbors or advocating for global change, being a Leo means we have a seat at the table. This trip proved that no matter how big the world feels, a small group of determined students from one town can truly make their mark.
