For graduating seniors at Somers High School, the end of the year isn't just about final exams and prom, but rather, it’s about celebrating a legacy of service. The Somers Lions Club Scholarship program has become a cornerstone of the community’s youth outreach, proving that while grades matter, character and community impact matter more.

More Than Just a Grade Point Average

Unlike traditional academic grants, the Lions’ awards are rooted in the international motto, "We Serve." To be eligible, students must demonstrate a robust history of volunteerism, often requiring participation in at least three major community projects or over 50 hours of dedicated service.

The most coveted award is the "Lions Bowl," a prestigious honor presented during the Senior Awards Night to a student who exemplifies exceptional leadership and citizenship.

The Ripple Effect of "Giving Back"

The impact of these scholarships goes far beyond the financial boost, which typically ranges from $500 to $2,000 per student. For many recipients, particularly those in the Somers Leo Club, this award acts as a "graduation" from youth service into a lifetime of civic engagement.

By distributing thousands of dollars annually back into the local youth community, the Lions ensure that the next generation of doctors, teachers, and tradespeople carries the spirit of Somers with them to college and beyond.

Powered by the Community

What makes these scholarships truly special is how they are funded. Every dollar awarded is "earned" through the hard work of Lion volunteers and the generosity of Somers residents. Major funding sources include:

  • The Charity Car Raffle: A local staple where the winner often walks away with a new vehicle or a life-changing cash prize.

  • Independence Day at Reis Park: Every hot dog and soda sold during the event contributes directly to the scholarship fund.

When you support a Lions event, you aren't just having a good time; you are directly funding the education of a local student who has spent their high school years making Somers a better place.
