How the Somers Leos turned a freezing MLK Day into a wave of warmth for Westchester.

On a freezing Monday in January, while most students were catching up on sleep, the Somers Leos were busy turning the Van Tassel House into a hub of community action. This wasn’t just a simple volunteer event; it was the Day of Service, a time to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by rolling up our sleeves for the neighbors who need it most. Under the motto "Warm Hands, Warm Hearts," our crew set out with a clear mission: ensure that no one in Westchester has to face the winter without the essentials.

The spark for this year’s drive came directly from our own—conceived and led by Somers High students Sean Donnelly, Gabe Stor, and Alex Donnelly. This is exactly what the Leos are about: finding an opportunity to make a difference and running with it. These student leaders didn’t just wait for an assignment; they saw a need, planned the logistics, and rallied the town. The community’s response was overwhelming. By the end of the four-hour event, we had collected over 30 massive bags filled to the brim with gently used winter coats, knit hats, thick gloves, and scarves.

But collecting the gear is only half the story. The real impact happens when those donations reach the people who need them. Our team coordinated deliveries to The Sharing Shelf in Port Chester and the Community Center of Northern Westchester. These organizations work tirelessly to support homeless adults, teens, and children who are often overlooked during the coldest months. In Westchester, where the contrast between wealth and need can be stark, these items aren't just clothes—they are a shield against the elements and a message that the community cares.

Seeing the mountain of bags at the end of the day was a powerful reminder of what happens when a "Young Hero" mindset takes over. We didn't just fill a truck; we provided warmth and dignity to hundreds of neighbors. This drive proved that you don’t need a corporate budget to make a massive impact; you just need a squad that’s willing to show up and a town like Somers that’s ready to give. To everyone who dropped off a coat or shared our posts: you are part of this legacy. The winter might be cold, but because of the Leos, Westchester is a little bit warmer.
