Early vision matters more than many of us realize. Experts estimate that up to 80 percent of learning is visual, and undetected vision problems in childhood can affect everything from reading and school performance to confidence and social development. Through the Lions SEE (Screening Eyes Early) Program, the Somers Lions Club partnered with the Mt. Kisco Lions Club to bring free vision screenings to local children and help detect potential issues long before they become obstacles to success.

The screenings focus on children ages one to five and are performed by trained Lions volunteers using specialized screening technology. The equipment can quickly identify signs of common vision concerns such as nearsightedness, astigmatism, eye misalignment, and amblyopia, often called lazy eye, which is a leading cause of vision loss in children. Screening results are reviewed by specialists at the Ira G. Ross Eye Institute, who determine whether a child should be referred to an eye care professional for further evaluation.

By bringing these screenings directly into daycare centers, schools, and community settings, the Somers and Mt. Kisco Lions help ensure that families have access to early detection and guidance. Identifying vision concerns early gives children the best chance to receive treatment and start their educational journey with the clear vision they need to learn, grow, and thrive.
