The Somers Lions Club has shared a strong partnership with Guiding Eyes for the Blind for decades. In 1966, charter president Wayne Van Tassell helped establish the relationship, encouraging Lions to support the organization’s mission of pairing guide dogs with people who are blind or visually impaired.
Guiding Eyes provides professionally trained guide dogs at no cost to recipients, helping individuals gain greater independence and mobility. Each placement represents a significant investment, with the cost of raising and training a guide dog exceeding $40,000. The organization relies entirely on donations from individuals, foundations, and service organizations like the Lions.
Over the years, Lions contributions have helped support key improvements including new kennels, transportation vehicles, and training facilities. The partnership continues to grow through the Van Tassell Society, which promotes the mission of Guiding Eyes throughout Lions Clubs. For the Somers Lions, supporting this life-changing work remains a proud part of their commitment to vision care.
