Since 1966, the Somers Lions have proudly partnered with Guiding Eyes for the Blind (GEB) in Yorktown, supporting their mission to pair blind individuals with guide dogs and provide a new sense of independence. President Wayne Van Tassell, a GEB board member, inspired the Lions to donate, helping blind individuals gain freedom and confidence through guide dogs.

Over the past 50 years, the Somers Lions have been a consistent major donor, contributing to new kennels, vehicles, breeding centers, and training facilities. Donations, combined with grants and public support, have enabled GEB to provide 160 guide dogs annually and offer free replacements throughout a recipient’s life — today, each placement costs over $40,000.

Each July, the Van Tassell Society hosts Lions Day at GEB, inviting members to tour the facilities, meet students and puppies, present awards, and celebrate the legacy of Lion D. Wayne Van Tassell. Through this enduring partnership, the Somers Lions continue to transform lives, one guide dog at a time.
